Habit 6 – Scoreboard watching
Habit 6 requires you to keep a compelling but visible scoreboard that tracks a handful of meaningful past, current and future-focused measures. |
Pearson’s law states that “When performance is measured, performance improves. When performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates.” The research shows that the acceleration rate of success can be between 300% and 1,200%!
There is simply no way to know whether or not you are being successful or progressing towards intentional success unless success is defined and performance is tracked and reported.
This where Habit 6 of effective execution comes in – Watching the scoreboard to win the game.
Keeping scores real-time motivate people to win
The fundamental purpose of a players’ scoreboard is to motivate team members to win their game. Everyone immediately knows the game scores at all times. They can tell whether or not they are winning the game.
People disengage and remain uncommitted when they do not know the game score or when they cannot see at a glance whether or not they are winning. Future-focused measures show what the players can influence now, while past measures show the results of their past actions, good and bad.
Likewise, keep a compelling but visible ‘player’s scoreboard’ in ‘real-time’ to increase transparency, morale, engagement and ownership of your goal attainment. When a handful of meaningful future-focused, current and past measures are not captured on a visual scoreboard that is regularly updated, goal attainment will remain a dream.
